Let’s face it: pain and suffering can leave us feeling confused, hurt, or even distant from God. Whether it’s a global tragedy or a personal heartbreak, we’ve all asked some form of the question:
“Why would a loving God allow this?”
At Bayside, we believe God invites us to bring those questions to Him—and we also believe His Word offers real answers and real hope.
The Bible tells us God created a perfect world and called it “very good” (Genesis 1:31). There was no pain. No death. No sickness. Just life with God—whole and beautiful.
But that world didn’t stay perfect.
In Genesis 3, Adam and Eve chose to disobey God. That moment—often called “The Fall”—was when sin entered the world. And with sin came brokenness:
suffering, death, fear, and separation from God.
Romans 5:12 says it this way:
“Just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned.”
That one choice disrupted everything, and we’ve been living in the ripple effects ever since.
Pain and suffering show up in two main ways:
Moral evil – things people choose to do (lying, abuse, injustice)
Natural evil – things that happen in the world (storms, disease, death)
Neither were part of God’s original design, but both exist because sin distorted the world we live in.
Still, even in a broken world, God is not absent. In fact, that’s where the good news begins.
God didn’t stay distant from our pain—He entered it.
Through Jesus, God stepped into our brokenness and felt everything we feel.
“He was despised and rejected… a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.” – Isaiah 53:3
Jesus didn’t just suffer with us—He suffered for us.
On the cross, He took the full weight of sin and death, and in His resurrection, He conquered both.
“There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” – Romans 8:1That means suffering isn’t the end of your story. Redemption is.
We’re living in what theologians call the “already but not yet.”
Already: Jesus defeated sin and death. We can walk in freedom, peace, and healing today.
Not yet: The world is still broken—but one day, Jesus will return and restore it all.
That’s why Revelation 21:4 is such a powerful promise:
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain…”
A new world is coming. One where pain doesn’t get the last word.
It’s a fair question—and the Bible doesn’t dodge it. While we won’t always understand every reason, Scripture offers several key truths:
1. Free Will Is Real
God didn’t create robots—He created people with choice. Love only means something if we’re free to choose it. Unfortunately, that freedom also means we can choose sin.
“Now choose life…” – Deuteronomy 30:19
2. This World Is Broken
Sin didn’t just affect people—it affected everything. All creation is groaning for redemption.
“The whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth…” – Romans 8:22
3. God Uses Pain for Good
Even what the enemy meant for evil, God can turn for good. Suffering can shape us, grow us, and bring us closer to Him.
“In all things God works for the good of those who love Him…” – Romans 8:28
4. His Power Shows Up in Weakness
Sometimes it’s in our deepest pain that we see God’s strength most clearly.
“This happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.” – John 9:3
Until Jesus returns, pain is still part of our reality. But you don’t have to face it alone—or without hope. Here are some ways to walk through it with faith:
🟡 Turn to God in Prayer
Prayer isn’t a last resort—it’s our lifeline. Talk to Him honestly. He’s listening.
“In every situation… present your requests to God. And the peace of God… will guard your hearts.” – Philippians 4:6–7
🔹Trust His Plan
Even when you don’t see what God is doing, you can trust who He is.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart… and He will make your paths straight.” – Proverbs 3:5–6
🔶Find Community
Don’t walk through pain alone. You were made for real relationships that lift you up.
“Carry each other’s burdens…” – Galatians 6:2
📖 Anchor Yourself in Truth
God’s Word is a rock when everything else feels shaky.
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted…” – Psalm 34:18
👀 Fix Your Eyes on What’s Ahead
This life isn’t all there is. Heaven is coming.
“Our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory…” – 2 Corinthians 4:17–18
Jesus didn’t just come to rescue our souls—He came to restore all things.
A new heaven and earth (Revelation 21:1)
Evil completely defeated (Revelation 20:10)
Joy that never ends (Psalm 16:11)
Pain has a shelf life. But God’s joy is eternal.
If you’re hurting right now, hear this:
You are not forgotten.
You are not alone.
And this pain is not the end of your story.
Through Jesus, we find purpose in the pain, strength for today, and hope for eternity. Suffering may visit—but it doesn’t get to stay.
So keep going. Keep trusting. Keep looking up.
Because God is still in control—and He’s not done with your story.
