Characteristics of Jochebed

Exodus 2:1-10

1. She was significant but not known

Colossians 3:23 (NIV): Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.

Hebrews 11:23 (NIV): By faith Moses’ parents hid him for three months after he was born, because they saw he was no ordinary child, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict. Hebrews 11:27 (NLT): It was by faith that Moses left the land of Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger. He kept right on going because he kept his eyes on the one who is invisible. Isaiah 41:13 (NIV) “For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you ‘Do not fear; I will help you!’”

2. She was Intentional

Exodus 2:2 (NIV): When she [Jochebed] saw that [Moses] was a fine child, she hid him for three months.Psalm 127:3 (NLT): Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him.

Hebrews 11:24–26 (NLT): It was by faith that Moses, when he grew up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. 25 He chose to share the oppression of God’s people instead of enjoying the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26 He thought it was better to suffer for the sake of Christ than to own the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking ahead to his great reward.

Deuteronomy 6:4–9 (NLT):  “Listen, O Israel! The Lord is our God, theLord alone. 5 And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. 6 And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. 7 Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. 8 Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. 9 Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”

Ephesians 5:15–17 (NIV): Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.

3. Focus on God’s promise and perspective

Hebrews 11:7 (ESV): By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household.

Deuteronomy 34:10–12 (NIV): Since then, no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face, 11 who did all those signs and wonders the Lord sent him to do in Egypt—to Pharaoh and to all his officials and to his whole land. 12 For no one has ever shown the mighty power or performed the awesome deeds that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.

3 John 4 (NIV): I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.
