Parable of the Two Foundations; Build Below The Surface
Big Idea:
You are always becoming what your habits are building.
Matt. 7:24-29 NIV - 24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” 28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.
"The difference between the wise and foolish hearer is not knowledge, but obedience."
Luke 6:48 NLT - says, 48 It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built.
Key Truth:
God digs before He elevates.
Colossians 2:6-7 NLT - 6 And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. 7 Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.
Luke 6:46 NIV - "Why do you call Me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?"
James 1:22-25 NIV - 22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.
Information never becomes foundation until it becomes obedience.
Truth admired but never applied becomes spiritual decoration.
You are always becoming what your habits are building and every decision lays another brick.
Key Truth:
What is deeply rooted will remain firmly standing.
Storms don't build character. They introduce you to it.
Ephesians 6:13 NLT - Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm.
God isn't trying to make you impressive. He's trying to make you immovable.
Visible collapse always begins with invisible compromise.
Key Truth:
Your ceiling becomes someone else's floor.
Legacy isn't about seeing everything you build. It's about building something worth leaving.
2 Timothy 2:2 NLT - You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others.
You are always becoming what your habits are building.
1 Cor. 10:1-4 NIV - For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. 2 They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. 3 They all ate the same spiritual food 4 and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.
My confidence isn't in my ability to hold onto Jesus. It's in His ability to hold onto me.
